Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic approach focusing on the fascia – the continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and organs. Restrictions or adhesions in the fascia can lead to pain and limited movement. With myofascial release, our therapists apply gentle, sustained pressure into fascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This is often done without lotion and involves waiting patiently for the fascia to “melt” or release under the therapist’s hands.

In a myofascial release session, you might experience slow stretches and holds. The therapist might use cross-hand techniques or slowly drag along the skin to feel where there is tightness, then maintain pressure. It’s a very calming, yet effective therapy. There’s no sudden movement – the key is sustained, light pressure (sometimes a few minutes on one spot) until a release is felt. Patients often feel a gradual easing of tension and a deep sense of relief.

MFR can benefit anyone with chronic pain, especially if you have areas that always feel tight or “stuck.” It’s commonly used for fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, neck and shoulder tightness, back pain, or old injuries that resulted in scar tissue. It’s also helpful post-surgery or after trauma to reduce scar adhesions (with proper clearance from your doctor).

Our therapists often incorporate myofascial techniques into massage sessions, but we can also do dedicated myofascial release treatments if needed. Don’t be surprised if an MFR session feels different from a regular massage – it might be less “gliding” and more holding, but it works on a very effective level to improve tissue health.
