Start Your Journey
Thank you for choosing Body Renewal Health Centre for your healthcare needs. We are excited to help you start your journey toward better health. To make your first visit as smooth as possible, here’s some information on what to expect and how to prepare.
Before Your First Appointment
To help make your first appointment smooth and stress-free, here are a few tips on forms, what to wear, insurance info, and when to arrive.
Your First Visit – What to Expect
Chiropractic First Visit: If your first appointment is with our chiropractor, expect a thorough initial assessment. We’ll sit down with you to discuss your health history, any current issues or pain, and your goals (e.g., “I want to be able to garden again without pain” or “I have daily headaches I’d like to get rid of”). The chiropractor will ask about things like past injuries or surgeries, your work and exercise routine, and other relevant health information – this helps us understand the full picture.
Next, the chiropractor will perform a physical examination. This may include: checking your posture and spinal alignment, testing your range of motion by having you bend or twist in certain ways, assessing your reflexes and muscle strength, and feeling (palpating) your spine and muscles for areas of tightness or dysfunction. You might also have orthopedic tests (like gently moving your limbs or neck in specific positions) to pinpoint the cause of pain. If you’re coming in for a specific issue, like lower back pain, the exam will focus on that area but also look at related areas (like your hips, posture, etc.).
After the assessment, the chiropractor will explain their findings to you in plain language. They’ll outline a recommended treatment plan – this could include an adjustment on the first visit if appropriate, or it might be scheduled for the next visit depending on time and your comfort. Feel free to ask any questions; we want you to understand and be comfortable with your care plan. If an adjustment is performed on the first visit, the chiropractor will describe what they’re going to do and ensure you’re okay with it. Many patients get a gentle adjustment and some therapy (like muscle stretching or soft tissue work) in the first session, and leave already feeling some relief!
Massage Therapy / Acupuncture First Visit: If your first appointment is a massage or acupuncture, the initial routine is similar – you’ll discuss your primary concerns and health history with the therapist. For a massage, your RMT will ask about areas of pain or tension, any injuries, and what pressure you prefer. They’ll step out of the room to let you get on the massage table (you’ll be draped with sheets for privacy at all times). They will only undrape the area they are working on, keeping you comfortable and covered. Communication is key – let your therapist know if any technique is too intense or if you need adjustment with pressure, room temperature, etc. Their goal is for you to have a beneficial and relaxing experience.
For acupuncture, the acupuncturist will ask detailed questions about your symptoms as well as general health questions (sleep, digestion, stress levels, etc.), because acupuncture takes a holistic approach. The treatment involves you lying comfortably while the practitioner inserts the needles. After needles are in, you’ll rest quietly for a while. They might dim the lights and play soft music – many patients find it meditative.
On any first visit, we’ll also cover a bit of clinic housekeeping – for example, our cancellation policy, how to book follow-ups, and answering any questions about fees or insurance. Payment is typically done after the session at the front desk (we accept [list payment methods, e.g., cash, credit, debit]). Future visits usually won’t be as long – the initial visit is the longest because of the assessment. Follow-ups: chiropractic follow-ups are around 15 minutes (longer if adding therapies), massage can be 30-90 minutes as you choose, acupuncture follow-ups might be around 45-60 minutes, etc.
We strive to ensure you never feel rushed – your health is our priority. By the end of the first visit, you should have a clear understanding of what’s going on with your body, what treatment we’re recommending, and you’ll hopefully already feel a bit of improvement! We’ll schedule your next appointment(s) as needed and make sure you know that we’re here for any questions that come up.
