Active Release Techniques (ART)

Active Release Techniques (ART) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue therapy. It’s designed to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves – often conditions caused by overuse. Overused muscles (from repetitive motions or injuries) can develop scar tissue and adhesions that cause pain, stiffness, weakness, or numbness. ART aims to break up these adhesions and restore normal function.

During an ART session, the practitioner (often our chiropractor or a specially trained massage therapist) will use his or her hands to evaluate the texture and tightness of your soft tissues. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. In simpler terms, the provider will put pressure on a muscle or tendon while they guide you through a stretch or movement. It’s an interactive therapy – you might be asked to move your arm or leg in a certain way while the therapist applies pressure. This helps “release” the tight area.

ART is especially effective for conditions like tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder impingements, sciatica, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and other injuries or chronic issues. Many athletes swear by ART for treating sports injuries and improving their range of motion. It’s also great for office workers with repetitive strain (think neck pain or forearm pain from computer work) and anyone with scar tissue from old injuries.

Treatment with ART can sometimes be a bit intense (as it targets deep adhesions), but it’s always within your comfort tolerance – be sure to communicate with the practitioner about pressure. The relief afterward can be significant: you may feel immediate improvement in flexibility and a reduction in pain once the tissue is freed up.
